M$ to buy Nokia smartphone division? WTF!?
According to many news tickers, Slashdot amongst them:
http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/12/01/05/2325227/microsoft-in-talks-to-buy-nokias-smartphone-division
rumors spread that Microsoft is about to take over the whole smartphone business from Nokia and as nice cream tip, Elop might change back to Microsoft and lead that pack.
If I would be a Nokia share holder I would sue Elop personally for intentionally destroying Nokia's smartphone business in order to have it later on being taken over by Microsoft entirely.
Doesn't that seem like a good 'evil' plan by Microsoft?
I am very disappointed by Nokia management. I always had a very good impression from Nokia as a company and respect for their partially pretty conservative leadership style. By intention they did not hop on each and every trend, which was good. But they pitily also lost contact to the real developments taking place and overslept several trends. They could have stayed a market leader. All their misery now is self made and I think that Elop has to take a large part of the responsibility for that.
Another nail into Nokia's coffin - too bad.
What they could have done instead of the M$ alliance?
That is easy to answer!
Killing S60 was correct - this is a dead end OS.
But then they should have divided their smartphone business in two units:
1. Android based - in order to have something with large market acceptance and hjave it soon.
2. Continue their own Linux development, be it Maemo, MeeGo or whatever. The latest MeeGo release on the N9 showed the increadible potential they had in there! Over time this could have developed, and I am sure that it would have, into a very good alternative for many users and businesses.
But now they are standing on front of catastrophy effectively ending in the buy-out of the business unit that during the past almost 10 years generated their largest revenue. How crazy is that?
I feel pity for all the Nokia phone workers - this continues to be a very rough time for them.
