Because those are the actual version numbers - at least in debian land
(including Maemo), your package version is the version of the last
release. If you are not using a "tagged" release, it is customary to
note this in the version number after the previous version. So, a
version number like 2.7+maemo+svn20070728-1 means that this follows 2.7,
is a maemo special build, from the contents of Subversion on July 28,
2007, and that it is the first debian package of this upstream source
version. The correct formatting of the version and the embedded date
means that newer versions, if they are labeled in the same fashion, will
upgrade correctly: the only "mess" is that the version number doesn't
look nice to an end-user. However, neither does most of the Maemo
packages out there - it's a function of the package management system
and rather inconsequential to the user as long as the developer does it
right. (which Graham has done)

Thanks for these packages - I'm updating and will try my sync
instructions again. Do you think there may be any change to the issue
where OpenSync connected to GPESYNCD frequently reports "Sync failed,
unable to write one or more objects"? It was intermittent on my old
firmware, and constant with the new firmware, and so I am wondering what
tablet-specific factors may cause changes in the behavior.

Thanks for these packages and the work the whole GPE team does - I find
it very useful!
