Which version of glib and gtk do you use? Which version of gpe-conf do you have
installed?
Could you run the application from the command line and check for any output?

Neal, does the applet do the gpe init? If not you need to make sure the
directory exists on your own.

This would be useful indeed, but I would do this with a very low priorty
because you usually can use your package manager to find out which version you
have installed.
