Well as Nokia will only release it half november (if it does not get
delayed) we cannot test it before that.

Well if you are going to upgrade to IT2008 you will have to flash it. So
you need to back up your data. If I am correct all of it should be
in /home/user/.gpe. So as you will have a back-up you can try it out
without losing anything.
