It is really for Florian to say, but here are my two cents...
I know nothing about translation (as I keep saying, I am really not a UI guy!)
but it seems like this is still a good idea. Isn't it?

That is the problem. We really need a volunteer to bring these up to date.
Also, some clear instructions for developers on the GPE wiki, bringing
http://www.linuxtogo.org/gowiki/GPEInternationalisation up to date, would be
useful. I, for one, have no idea what I am supposed to do when I add more
strings to an application (beyond making sure I use _(...)).
Unfortunately, I'm not volunteering. Does anyone have any time to do this?
How about someone having a go with just one application (gpe-calendar is
probably the most popular so would be a good starting point)?

In the absence of a volunteer to bring things up to date, the translations are
effectively mastered in SVN I believe. At least for the maemo builds it just
uses the files in SVN. If there is something else I should be doing (for
example to get files from translationproject.org) let me know.

A volunteer yet to be found!
