This was subject of long discussions. The main idea of a combined name filed is
to have proper support for names that are constructed different like the common
names in western countries.
Currently I see one option for improvement: The combined field would be
generated from the names once and can be set manually later on. Should be easy
to implement, but time is very limited currently. Patches would be great!

I appreciate that, but you notice it falls down especially with non-"western"
names.  Vincent Van Gogh, etc.

That would be an acceptable compromise!
