Are there build issues in Gentoo? Are there unfixed upstream bug
reports? Is there some other reason to remove it? I maintain the GPE
packages in Debian and I see no reason to remove GPE from Debian.

None of the packages fail to build with current versions of
dependencies, there are minimal bug reports and only a handful of
packages have any patches in Debian (mostly due to Debian wanting
hardening flags set).

Is that the sole criterion?
