Revival of the dead? OpenMoko Freerunner getting alive again!
Quite amazing - during the past two months the "old" OpenMoko Freerunner project gets alive again.
After a long pause some people are working on cleaning up the Freerunner kernel sources again and try to push the patches upstream.
Excellent!
This also seems to clean up some bugs as well.
Along the same lines the SHR distribution (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SHR) is getting continuous updates which make testing FSO (http://www.freesmartphone.org) easier. And if you are looking for a complete working and already nicely productised solution then the latest QTmoko version (http://qtmoko.sf.net) might be for you (latest version V24 is dated beginning of June 2010 - so up to date!).
Nice!
My GTA02 is now laying on my desk installed with QTmoko and serves me well as day-to-day phone for a specific SIM card I still have. Making calls works flawlessly once I had the mixer settings right and it should last about one week of standby after enabling the modem deep sleep.
After all the years the OpenMoko phones (GTA01 / GTA02) are still the *only* really fully open mobile phones on the market - what a pity.
